Bear Information that visitors should know.....
We don't have many instances of bear sightings on property, but here are some useful facts in case you do encounter one here or anywhere else.

1.  A bear’s prime motivation is FOOD.
Bears have a tremendous sense of smell and can detect odor up to a mile away.
If a bear doesn’t find food, it will move on.

2Bears are generally docile.

3.   Bears will usually avoid humans.

4Bears stand on their hind legs NOT to attack but out of curiosity and to  get a
     better look or smell.

5Mother bears with cubs can become aggressive if they feel you are threatening
     their cubs.

Here are some guidelines to help stay safe
while out on the trails...

1.     Travel in groups and remain on trails. Stay alert to surroundings.

2.     Do NOT allow kids to go alone ahead of you and keep dogs on leashes at all times.

3.     Do NOT carry any type of food with you.

4.     “Advertise” your presence by making noise; for example: wearing bells, singing, talking, or clapping.

5.     Stay calm if you encounter a bear.  DO NOT RUN !

6.     Let the bear know you are human by talking. Also, lift your arms overhead to look bigger.

7.     SLOWLY back away and avoid direct eye contact with bear.

8.     Report ALL bear encounters to Arboretum Public Safety  or Education Center staff at

665-2492 or 779-8622.
