Saturday, October 14, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Internationally recognized bonsai authority and 2006 Carolina Bonsai Expo guest artist William N. Valavanis provides the highlight program of the weekend, an in-depth examination of the literati form of bonsai. Through the use of a PowerPoint presentation and then a live demonstration on an old Blue Atlas Cedar, Mr. Valavanis will share his extensive expertise on this most austere, artistic and often misunderstood way of shaping miniaturized trees. Mr. Valavanis is well known and highly respected in bonsai circles. His more than forty-year study of bonsai has included formal apprenticeship in Japan and a long-term relationship as student and collaborator with Yuji Yoshimura. He is the proprietor of the International Bonsai Arboretum in Rochester, NY, and has published International BONSAI magazine for the past twenty-seven years. Mr. Valavanis stands at the forefront of the appreciation and practice of classical bonsai in the United States. The cost of this program is $15 for Arboretum members and $20 for non-members, and the 100 available spaces will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Reservations can be made by phone ((828) 665-2492) or in person at the Arboretum; sorry, but no reservations may be made via the Internet.
