Lectures and Demonstrations
(All programs listed below take place in the classrooms on the 1st floor of the Education Center)
Saturday, October 13th:
11:00 AM to 12:00 PM – “Sogetsu School of Ikebana” demonstration by Carol Cook, professional teacher and President of the Winston-Salem chapter of Ikebana International. Ms. Cook lived, studied and taught for many years in Japan, before moving to North Carolina and establishing the Sogetsu Study Group in Davidson. She has attained the rank of “Riji”, the highest possible at the Sogetsu School of Flower Arranging. The Arboretum is proud to feature Ms. Cook’s presentation at the Carolina Bonsai Expo.
2:00 to 4:00 PM – “Six Eyes, Three Minds, One Plant – Something’s Gotta Give” demonstration by NC Arboretum Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura, with Ken Duncan and John Geanangel of the Bonsai Club of South Carolina. Nobody knows for sure what to expect when John, Ken and Arthur take the stage together, least of all the three of them, but it’s never dull. This time around the subject is a large Prostrata Juniper with any number of design possibilities. Will it lead to a love fest or fisticuffs? Come early to get a good seat and find out.
Sunday, October 14th:
1:00 to 2:30 PM - "The Art of Bonsai Display" lecture/demonstration by Harold Johnson of the Triangle Bonsai Society. The way in which a bonsai is presented can have a dramatic effect on how it is perceived, and what better time to learn about this subject than during the premier bonsai show of the Southeast? Harold Johnson studied for years with the late, great bonsai teacher, Felton Jones, who was a master of bonsai display. After attending this program, you will view the trees on display at the Expo with new eyes.

Internationally recognized bonsai authority and 2007 Carolina Bonsai Expo guest artist Brussel Martin provides a program that examines both the horticultural and artistic aspects of bonsai.

Randy Clark of The Bonsai Learning Center in Charlotte, NC will conduct a workshop program for beginner bonsai students.
Mr. Clark is an internationally recognized bonsai authority, whose lively spirit and animated style make him a popular teacher. His Bonsai Learning Center in Charlotte attracts serious students from across the region. As a special addition to this year's Expo, he has graciously agreed to conduct a workshop specifically for beginner bonsai students. The objective of this program is to provide an easy entry-level experience that provides each participant with a simple little bonsai and the information necessary to successfully keep it alive. Class size is limited to 10 (ten) students, to ensure that each participant receives a generous share of personal attention. The price of the workshop includes a young juniper plant, glazed bonsai container, soil, wire and a book on bonsai basics. Participants may bring their own tools if they have them or use tools provided for the class, which must be returned at the end of the session.

Reservations must be secured by payment, either by credit card at the time of registration or by personal check received within 5 working days of the time of registration.
Reservations will be taken beginning at 9:00 AM on Monday, September 17. No reservations will be accepted prior to that time.
Sunday, October 14, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Terri Ellis Todd, a Master in the Ichiyo School of Ikebana and president of the Asheville Chapter of Ikebana International, will conduct an ikebana workshop for beginners.
Ikebana is a uniquely creative form of flower arranging, with roots in Japanese culture. Mrs. Todd is an active ikebana teacher in the western North Carolina area, and has given numerous excellent demonstrations at The North Carolina Arboretum. Mrs. Todd will conduct a workshop for 12 (twelve) students, offering a comfortable introduction to this fascinating art. The plant material, container and kenzan needed for creating an attractive ikebana arrangement will be provided, and students will take their work home with them. Each student will need to bring with them a pair of clippers and a container to hold water for taking home extra plant material.
The cost of this workshop is $55 for Arboretum members and $60 for non-members, and the 12 available spaces will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Reservations can be made by phone ((828) 665-2492) or in person at the Arboretum; sorry, but no reservations may be made via the Internet. Reservations must be secured by payment, either by credit card at the time of registration or by personal check received within 5 working days of the time of registration.

Saturday, October 13, 1:00 - 4:00 PM: Korean Boxwood Workshop with Jim Doyle
Bonsai artist Jim Doyle
will conduct an exclusive workshop program for intermediate and advanced bonsai
students.
Please note: these programs are not for novice or beginner level students!
Participants must have experience and a firm grasp of bonsai fundamentals.
Jim Doyle is the proprietor of Nature's Way
Nursery in Harrisburg, PA. He is well known for his horticultural and artistic
skills, as well as his warmth and good humor. In this workshop students will
work on unique plant material, hand selected by Mr. Doyle from his nursery. Each
of the trees is more than 15 years old, 18-24" in height, with 1
1/2-2" caliper trunks. They have been pre-trained and have good surface
roots. All plants are well established in training pots, so roots will not need
to be worked on and class time can be dedicated to pruning, wiring and shaping.
Mr. Doyle will give in-depth information on the cultivation of this unusual but
not difficult to grow species.
Each class will be limited in size to only 5 (five) participants in order to maximize the one-on-one time with this excellent and popular instructor, insuring an intimate learning experience. Participants must provide their own tools, wire, turntable and any other items needed for the work that will be done.
Workshop fee:
Korean Boxwood - $255 for Arboretum members and $260 for non-members.
All available spaces (5 total) will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Reservations can be made by phone ((828) 665-2492) or in person at the Arboretum; sorry, but no reservations may be made via the Internet. Reservations must be secured by payment, either by credit card at the time of registration or by personal check received within 5 working days of the time of registration.
Reservations will be taken beginning at 9:00 AM on Monday, September 17.
Saturday, October 13, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Hinoki Cypress Workshop with Brussel Martin
2007 Expo Guest
Artist Brussel Martin will conduct an exclusive workshop program for
intermediate level bonsai students.
Please note: this program is not for novice or beginner level students!
Participants must have experience and a firm grasp of bonsai fundamentals.
In this workshop students will work on excellent plant material, hand selected by Mr. Martin from his nursery. Hinoki Cypress is a classic bonsai subject, but this kind of quality, pre-trained material is not easy to come by. The plants for this workshop are 24-28" in height, with a caliper of ¾-1" and good branching. Most importantly, they have been grown from cuttings, not grafted, so there is no unsightly graft union at the base of the tree. All plants are well established in bonsai training pots, so roots will not need to be worked on and class time can be dedicated to pruning, wiring and shaping.
Each class will be limited in size to only 8
(eight) participants in order to maximize the one-on-one time with this
experienced and knowledgeable instructor, making for a comfortable learning
experience. Participants must provide their own tools; necessary wire will be
supplied.
Workshop fee:
Hinoki Cypress - $195 for Arboretum members and $200 for non-members.
All available spaces will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
