Metalphoto
We use the Metalphoto labeling system to produce our permanent labels. This is a photographic process that uses light sensitive anodized aluminum plates. The process is performed in a darkroom atmosphere the same as would be used in developing a photograph. We produce a "negative" from computer using in total 4 different software packages. We download plant information from BG Base and export that to a spreadsheet program. After the data is organized and cleaned up we then do a mail merge with a word processor that has the label format already laid out with lines and font sizes. We then copy and paste the labels to a graphics program to reverse the image and print to a transparency. The image has to be reversed (emulsion side down) so that the image will transfer to the metal plate cleanly. The exposed area on the plate turns black and the area covered by the printed image retains its original color. This process produces a professional looking label.
