Weed, Touch-Me-Not (Impatiens capensis) The "jewel" refers to the droplets of dew that gather on the surface of the leaves, glistening like small balls of mercury. The "touch-me-not" comes later in the season when the seed capsules dry creating considerable internal tension. The slightest touch causes them to break and the seeds shoot out. An annual, in the right damp site this jewel can become a bit of a weed. Check your local drug store and you'll probably find at least one poison ivy antidote that lists Jewel Weed as an ingredient. A light yellow species, Impatiens pallida or Pale Touch-me-not is also common in our area. Provided by: |
