Projects for Schools

Ideas for schools to incorporate during the migration:

Team up with Journey North, an Internet based program for schools to help track various animal migrations

Participate in Journey North's Symbolic Butterfly Migration - deadline this year is October 12, 2007

Consider planting a Butterfly Garden at your school. Fall is a good time to prepare the soil, create the garden, prepare the soil for select spring plantings, and even plant some perennials or bulbs in the fall. Mulch for winter, etc. More ideas on butterfly gardening available at websites for the National Wildlife Federation and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and www.monarchwatch.org

Draw a compass rose on the school playground with chalk pointing the way to Mexico as a symbolic gesture for the monarchs

Draw an outline of the North American continent on the playground and slowly walk the routes beginning first for NE monarchs to Mexico, naming the states, rivers, national forests and parks that might be crossed; next for monarchs flying to Mexico from the Great Lakes region and then for monarchs that are in western Canada that will over winter in southern California.
