Atmosphere and Climate

This program explores the importance of air pollution issues and their effects on humans and other organisms. Through field observation and discussion, students will observe and measure air pollution and talk about how humans have impacted air quality. Students will use equipment to make estimates of ground-level ozone and particulate matter. After a discussion on the causes of climate change, students will identify and observe the seasonal behaviors of local plant and animal species as part of the National Phenology Network while using technology such as hand held GPS units. This data is then uploaded into this nationwide citizen science effort for comparison to future observations.

Principles:
  • Our air contains a naturally occurring mixture of gasses.
  • The atmosphere contains stratified layers, each with its own distinct properties.
  • Particulate matter can be measured by use of a high-volume air sampler.
  • Ground-level ozone can be monitored by hand-held electronic devices.
  • Air quality monitoring and stewardship is necessary to maintain a healthy environment for people and other organisms.
  • There are natural and human-caused factors that contribute to air pollution.
  • Global climate change can be monitored by observing the seasonal behaviors of local plants and animals.
  • Observation, use of technology, and the recording of data are important in monitoring human impacts on the environment.

What do my students need?
Students should wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather. A majority of the program will take place outdoors, so students, teachers and adult chaperones should wear sturdy footwear. Students with physical disabilities or limitations are capable of participating, but the instructor should be told prior to day of the program to make any special arrangements.
