Fall-Winter 2011 Exhibit Program: Sustainable Shelter
Learn about the functions of shelters and how animals and humans have adapted to differing environments through an amazing diversity of structures. In our companion program, students head outside for an educator-led program including a short woodland hike to investigate animal homes and use found materials to build their own shelter.
Principles:
- Shelter is an important part of animal habitats.
- The needs, structures, materials and design of structures build by humans and animals have many similarities.
- Humans provide shelter for wildlife to offset human-caused habitat loss.
- Humans can use sustainable methods and materials in creating structures and lessening their impact on the environment.
Duration: 90 minutes (includes a 45-minute outdoor, guided program and 45-minutes of self-led time in the exhibit).
Cost: $5.00 per student, or $2.00 per student for only exhibit visit. Payment should be given to the instructor at the start of the program. No charge for one teacher/adult for every five students.
Months Offered: September 24 - December 16
