Welcome to EcoLab

An Interactive Environmental Learning Lab for Kids!

EcoLab (formerly known as Classroom 3) is an innovative, hands-on learning space designed to introduce children of all ages to the wonders of nature and ecology by including Service Learning and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education in ways that foster a sense of adventure, encourage exploration and promote environmental awareness and stewardship.

Features of EcoLab include:

  • Over 20 species of live reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates native to North Carolina in realistic habitats;

  • A wildlife feeding station with an indoor viewing platform;

  • Displays featuring birds nests, eggs, skulls, preserved insects, leaves, tree seeds, rocks, minerals and fossils;

  • Student computer stations for viewing online field guides and uploading student-generated observations; and

  • A pre-kindergarten corner including puppets and story books.

EcoLab is comprised of three separate indoor learning spaces that support activities conducted along our 10 miles of trails and over 430 acres of gardens and woodlands.  Click the links on the left to learn more about each one!
