The third annual Box Turtle Day celebrates North Carolina’s state reptile, the Eastern box turtle. Participants can sign up for guided box turtle telemetry hunts, watch live reptile demonstrations, make turtle crafts and follow Shelly, the Arboretum’s resident turtle, along the Arboretum’s self-guided TRACK Trail. Special guests include Kids in Parks, The HERP Project and Carolina Box Turtle.

Schedule of Events

The third annual Box Turtle Day celebrates North Carolina’s state reptile, the Eastern Box Turtle. Participants can sign up for guided box turtle telemetry hunts, watch live reptile demonstrations, make turtle crafts and follow Shelly the Turtle along the Arboretum’s self-guided TRACK Trail.

  • 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Make a turtle craft in the Education Center lobby; play games such as “Tracker Hide and Seek,” “Turtle I Spy,” and “Box Turtle Tag” along the TRACK Trail; meet professional box turtle researchers and rescuers from The HERP Project and Carolina Box Turtle, and participate at the “Leapin’ Lizards” count at the Bonsai Exhibition Garden.
  • 10:30 a.m. AND 12:00 p.m. – Turtle stories in the Wooden Amphitheater located behind the Plants of Promise garden.
  • 11:00 a.m. AND 1:00 p.m. – Meet Shelly the box turtle and participate in a Radio Telemetry Demonstration Hike.
