The North Carolina Arboretum’s annual Carolina Bonsai Expo will be held on Saturday, October 14, and Sunday, October 15, 2017, in the Arboretum’s Baker Exhibit Center and Education Center buildings.

This nationally-known event features juried exhibits by bonsai enthusiasts hailing from a multi-state region, including N.C., S.C., Va., Tenn., Ga., Ala., and Pa. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase live bonsai plants and supplies at the Expo’s bonsai marketplace, participate in bonsai workshops and watch free demonstrations. In its 22nd year, the Carolina Bonsai Expo is the premier annual bonsai event of the Southeast and the most popular plant show hosted by the Arboretum.

The Arboretum’s Carolina Bonsai Expo offers programs for both the bonsai community and general public.

Schedule of Events

Saturday, October 14

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – The North Carolina Arboretum’s bonsai collection will be on display in the Bonsai Exhibition Garden and the main bonsai exhibit will be held on the first floor of the Education Center. The Asheville Chapter of Ikebana International will host a special ikebana exhibit on the second floor of the Education Center. Vendors will have live bonsai plants and supplies available for purchase in the Bonsai Marketplace, located in the Baker Exhibit Center.

11 a.m. to 12 noon – Free ikebana educational program, “Ikebana Goes Appalachia,” lecture and demonstration by Suzanne Dillingham, junior master in the Ichiyou School. Held in the first floor classrooms of the Education Center.

1 p.m. to 5 p.m. – 2017 Carolina Bonsai Expo Main Event presentation: “Another Day at the Office,” featuring international bonsai artist Jack Sustic, illustrated lecture and live bonsai demonstration program located in the first floor classrooms of the Education Center. Sunday, October 15

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – The North Carolina Arboretum’s bonsai collection will be on display in the Bonsai Exhibition Garden and the main bonsai exhibit will be open on the first floor of the Education Center. 11 a.m. to 12 noon – Free bonsai educational program, “Design by Committee?” (Part 1). A live bonsai demonstration with Ken Duncan and John Geanangel of the Black Creek Bonsai Study Group and Arthur Joura, bonsai curator at The North Carolina Arboretum. Program will be held in the first floor classrooms of the Education Center.

1 to 2 p.m. – Free bonsai educational program, “Design by Committee?” (Part 2). A live bonsai demonstration with Ken Duncan and John Geanangel of the Black Creek Bonsai Study Group and Arthur Joura, bonsai curator at The North Carolina Arboretum. Program will be held in the first floor classrooms of the Education Center.

2:30 to 3:30 p.m. – A live auction of bonsai and bonsai-related items, located in first floor classrooms of Education Center. A $1 registration fee will be collected at the door for this event.

3:30 p.m. – Raffle drawing, presentation of the “People’s Choice” award and closing remarks; located in the first floor classrooms of the Education Center.
