Welcome to OAK (Outdoor Adventure Kids)

A safety-first approach to exploring the natural world with other kids.

The North Carolina Arboretum’s team of expert environmental educators are excited to continue our weekday drop-off program, OAK at The N.C. Arboretum, which kicks off a new season of adventure in January 2024.  OAK takes place almost entirely outdoors, where kids (6-13) are encouraged to play, learn, and explore together in an environment where they take the lead.

Note: We strictly adhere to our age policy and require all participants to be aged 6-13 by January 19 for the winter session, March 1 for Spring Session 1, and April 12 for Spring Session 2.

Winter and Spring 2024 Registration will be 1/4 at 11am

Winter 2024 Programming will consist of 1 5 week session, on Fridays from January 19 to February 16, from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Spring 2024 Programming will consist of 2 rounds of 5 week sessions, on Fridays from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Session 1 will occur each Friday from March 1st to March 29th. Session 2 will occur each Friday from April 12 to May 10.

Each session of OAK is $260 for nonmembers and $234 for members.

OAK participants in the past have made natural dyes with collected plants, looked for treasures while geocaching, explored our pond and streams, built natural shelters to withstand the elements, and practiced firebuilding among so much more!  We’re excited to see what new and fun learning experiences we can get into together in the new year.

Participants should be prepared to spend their time in OAK outside.  Please keep an eye on the day’s forecast and dress appropriately.

Safety Guidelines for Gathering in Groups:
The Arboretum’s COVID-19 safety precautions are in line with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services, the Buncombe County Department of Health, and the City of Asheville.
Here are some ways we encourage participants to take precautions:
  • Consider testing yourself and child at home before programming at the Arboretum, regardless of how you feel.
  • Proactively monitor yourself and child and have them stay home if you or anyone in your family are experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19 or any illness or if you have been notified of possible exposure.
  • Although mask wearing is currently not mandated indoors or outdoors, masks will be available to use according to your preference.

OAK Staff

The Arboretum’s team of experienced outdoor educators have received training and practice in engaging youth within our post-COVID world. It is our preference that the same two educators consistently engage with the same small group throughout the 5-week program, but there may be times that substitutions are made.
